SUMMER SCHOOL OF 2022
CONFLICT RESOLUTION:
How to Mediate?
Located in The Hague, Netherlands
Whether it is Ukraine, Israel, Yemen, or Afghanistan, conflict is an undeniable part of the domain of international relations. Although the nature of conflict has changed to include different modes of warfare such as drones and private mercenaries, the main questions surrounding conflict have remained the same, namely ‘why does a conflict occur?’ and ‘what can be done to solve a given conflict?’. The latter question is where the role of international negotiation in the shape of mediation comes into view. In the words of William Zartman, conflicts are ‘only ripe for resolution through mediation when a Mutually Hurting Stalemate is reached’.
Diplomats play a key role in facilitating mediation sessions. But as we all know not every meeting is a success, indicating that you cannot be a good mediator before becoming a good negotiator. So how do diplomats know when this so-called Mutually Hurting Stalemate is reached? And if so, where do they meet and who should mediate? If you recognize yourself in these questions then this summer school might exactly be what you are looking for.
The program of 2022 includes speakers like Paul Meerts, Hans van den Berg and practising diplomats. Students are offered the opportunity to expand their (international) network with networking sessions and practice their skills in a diplomatic simulation. In doing so, participants represent a country or an international organisation, prepare a position, and negotiate an agreement.
AS A PARTICIPANT YOU...

WHAT PARTICIPANTS SAID...
Higly recommend this course, well organised and great learning content. Gives realistic and good experience what diplomacy is and how it is conducted. Change to speak and learn from high level professionals on the field.
My experience at the summer school of The Young Diplomat was incredible. It was a week full of cooperation, negotiation, and learning. We met with diplomats, experienced professors, officials, and citizens involved in the fields of diplomacy, justice, and human rights. For me, it was a great opportunity for networking and learning for my academic and professional career. I would absolutely recommend this summer school for future students.
We as participants of the Young Diplomat Summer school experienced a very intense and informative program in just 1 week! We visited key political institutions in the Hague, had many interesting lectures from real diplomats, scientists and professionals. Experienced plenty unforgettable moments, built a huge international network, gained real negotiation skills and had a lot of fun. Highly recommend summer school!
